Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1860 1939) became an overnight sensation in 1894 when he designed a poster for a play starring Sarah Bernhardt. His groundbreaking style launched Art Nouveau, yet he denied any connection to the Art Nouveau movement. Mucha worked prolifically in his self-invented genre, but he dismissed his commercial work as frivolously pretty in comparison with his real artwork.
